SES-5 is a commercial geostationary telecommunications satellite owned by Dutch satellite operator SES World Skies. Astra 4B, which is now known as Sirius-5 at the time, was the satellite’s original name.

SES-5 will be available in multiple bands. Ku-band beams are designed for direct television transmission, with a coverage area in Africa, Scandinavia, and the Baltic States. Coverage on the C-band beams is intended for services such as GSM transport network, VSAT, maritime communications and video transmission in Europe (including the Middle East) and Africa. In addition, the satellite will have EGNOS transponders installed as well.
